So many possibilities!
People experience gender in so many ways. The Gender Wheel lets you mix and match to explore the possibilities. The Guide for the Grown-ups in the back of the book gives more explanation and ideas about how to use The Gender Wheel with kids.
The Identity Wheel includes just some of the many words we can use to describe ourselves—the list goes on and is constantly changing. There is also a blank space for your own words! Gender Spectrum offers a basic overview of some of these terms and the language of gender, as well as a more in depth guide to understanding the dimensions of gender.
“The power of language to shape our perceptions of other people is immense. Precise use of terms in regards to gender can have a significant impact on demystifying many of the misperceptions associated with gender. However, the vocabulary of gender continues to evolve and there is not universal agreement about the definitions of many terms. Nonetheless, here is some working language and examples of frequently used (and misused) terms. We offer them as a starting place for dialogue and understanding, which begins by clarifying how we are using various terms, rather than asserting that they represent the final or only definition of the various terms.” – From Gender Spectrum’s Language of Gender
Cultures around the world and throughout history have recognized more than two genders. Check out this cool interactive map:
